APEL for Admission (APEL (A))
Introduction

AeU plays a significant role in supporting the nation’s aspiration to enhance and widen educational opportunities among Malaysians. Through the provision of Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL), individuals can capitalise on their work experience and prior experiential learning to gain admission into AeU’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) have given their approvals for AeU to implement admission through APEL (formerly known as Flexible Entry)

APEL (A) was introduced to allow applicants without formal education qualification but have extensive experience to access tertiary level education, be it certificates, diplomas, bachelor’s degrees or master’s degrees.

To be eligible, applicants must fulfill the entry criteria outlined by the MOE and take the APEL assessment to determine their level of competency and readiness for enrolment.

APEL for Credits (APEL (C))
Introduction

Adult learners have acquired valuable knowledge, skills and competencies throughout their life and work experiences. Many however are unaware that their capabilities can be assessed in order to earn an equivalent academic credential at university level. The Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) at AeU adult learners to gain recognition and earn academic credits for their prior learning. APEL assesses, recognises and awards credits for the individual's prior experiential learning gained either through non-formal or informal means by determining the extent to which the learner has achieved the required learning / competency outcomes for award of credit for a course.

What is Prior Learning?

Apart from the conventional and formal classroom environment, learning can occur almost anywhere; in informal or non-formal settings. At work, adults learn during their training and development activities, short courses as well as on-the-job assignments. To deal with work challenges, they practice their problem-solving and decision-making skills to come up with viable solutions.

Adult learning also takes place during one's involvement in community projects or voluntary services and taking up hobbies like reading and independent studying. Learning from life and work experiences can have significant academic value and upon proper assessment, can be converted into academic credits. These credits, however, are granted on the basis of achieved learning and not, the experience itself.

How do we place academic value on Prior Learning?

Through APEL, experiential learning gained through informal or non-formal means are measured systematically against specified learning outcomes of a programme or course. Learning must be evident and assessed in terms of its authenticity, sufficiency, reliability and validity, prior to the award of APEL credits.

APEL (C) allows applicants to further save time and money on their higher education by translating their experience into credits in their enrolled programmes.

Under APEL(C), applicants can apply for credit waivers of up to 30% of total credit requirements for a course based on the applicant’s prior education experience and working experiences. The main principle used for determining credit waivers is to match the applicant’s competencies with the course learning outcome (CLO). The common methods employed under APEL(C) to assess applicants are via a ‘challenge test’ or a ‘portfolio test’ where a list of prior knowledge and competencies are compiled.

The duration of the MEd programme depends on the student’s dedication and time available. Students normally study 2 to 3 courses per semester. There are 3 semesters per year. Students can commence their studies during any semester and are given between 18 to 24 months to complete their MEd degree.
